I ended last year with the expectation that his career was over. Not in a critical or cynical way, rather just recognizing that his concussions occurred in run-of-the-mill sort of contact. The fact that he's still not clear after nearly a year does not bode well for him at all.
He came, we tried and it didn't work out. I understand the appeal and support the gamble. Reality is, though, even if he is cleared to play, he's one tackle away from another season-ending concussion.
Let's not forget the guy already came in with a specially designed helmet, mouthpiece and chinstrap.
It's not working. His head can't take the abuse.
Whether he ever plays again is still a bit in question, what's not in question, though, is how high risk he suffers another season-ender is. That's pretty much a guarantee.
The team is letting this play out in full, 1 because of the league, 2 because it appeases the family, 3 it buys time with the fans, 4 it preserves their outside chance that something good could come of this. I believe the guys in Allen Park are in full damage-control mode here, the same as Indy with Manning. Try to let the process play out where all involved were given proper consideration.
I hate to tell the kid it's over, but whatever his Plan B was to football, it's gotta be looming large right now.

I gotta agree, I don't think he ever plays again. I see them keeping him on the PUP until the deadline, putting him on IR for the year, and then releasing him next offseason after he fails his physical. Sad to see anybody have to go through this because his health is definitely going to suffer from the concussions he has already sustained. But its also said because he is so talented and we will never be able to see it fully grow. For his sake he needs to throw in the towel and figure out what he is going to do with the rest of his life.

It appears that evidence in the long term show significant effects due to concussions. You hear rumblings at the Pop Warner level, and Now Jr. And High School levels of how to protect players from "bone jarring hits". Which of course is a staple of Big Time Football. So the slippery slope has started as far as the Era of Hard Hitting Football.
I wonder how sucessful the New Era of "Flag Football" will be. Unless the Uniforms can be redesigned to absorb some of the impact...Football as we know it will be ending....and not to far in the future. Once the Lawyers get a lawsuit through against the NFL for someone who has lingering injuries from concussive history...The floodgates will open and the NFL will become a big time target for these lawsuits. (Deserving or not)...

Aside from what football might be turning into, the chances of a kid getting drafted has become just that much smaller if he has ANY history of concussion. Just looking at Best, if the draft were held tomorrow, any college athlete who had taken a hit like he did would go undrafted, I'm sure.

Just when I thought his goose was cooked, they let Josh Cribbs back in the game 1 week after an arms-stiff-in-the-air concussion.

I'll say it again... I expected last year that it was over for him.
Still, as this thing has drug on, I couldn't help but get my hopes up a little bit. Last year, as it was going down, it was easier to be objective. This year, as the offense has struggled, I begun hoping he could be installed in the offense for an immediate boost.
MLive's Anwar Richardson tweeted that he's heard the whole process they're going through now is/was just to buy enough time for Best to get his 4th year in the league in order to be vested to receive benefits.
If anyone should be on the hook for benefits/care, it should be the NCAA & UCLA. The hit that he took in college is what set him up for this. That AND that they played him the following week (or two) where he suffered another concussion (though it's not widely covered).

Looks Like Javid Best is the Poster Child for Concussions in the NFL. He in all likelihood will never play again.
