A day after the Detroit Lions lost running back Mikel Leshoure for the season to a torn Achilles, the team signed two backs to be his possible replacement.

Jerome Harrison and Mike Bell signed with the Lions this morning. To clear roster space, the team released undrafted rookie Preston Dial and waived-injured defensive back Maurice Leggett.

Harrison, a Kalamazoo native, rushed for 330 yards last season in stints with the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns. He spent his first four NFL seasons with the Browns.

Bell also split last season between Cleveland and Philadelphia - he and Harrison were traded for each other - and has played for the Broncos and Saints in his career. He rushed for a career-best 677 yards as a rookie.

Solid move, Mayhew. I fully expected a big splash name like Clinton Portis or somebody, but in honesty, now that Ricky Williams is off the market, Bell may be the best option to provide what they wanted from Leshoure.

These guys have a vision, and don't stray from it regardless of the adversity the team faces. They might make a tweak to things here or there, i.e. custom plays for Stanton last season, but overall they stick to the big picture, and only bring in guys that fit what they want while meanwhile coaching and tailoring things to who they have.

Clearly they want a 2 back scheme and not feature Best alone. Might be a decent band-aid.

I think Bell is better than Smith...Didn't he play for U of M?

This might settle the Kevin Smith question, both of these guys are serviceable. Too bad we won't get a look at Leshure, though..............
