Herb Nicholl's 1st Round Mock Draft

By Herb Nicholl Jr.

1.Houston Texans    Reggie Bush    RB    USC

The Texans are toying with selecting Mario Williams, but in the end they cannot pass on the best player in the draft.  While they do have a good running back, Bush is much better.  Some compare Bush to Marshall Faulk, and I agree with that.

2.New Orleans Saints   Mario Williams   DE   NC State

The Saints have two good defensive ends, and they signed quarterback Drew Brees in the off season, but they have a major need for offensive tackle and outside linebacker. Even so, Williams is a rare talent, and will be hard to pass up. I feel if they take Williams, they will trade defensive end Grant off for a extra draft pick. Some compare Williams to Julius Pepper.

3.Tennessee Titans   Matt Leinart   QB   USC

Tennessee's coaching staff wants Leinart, but the front office wants Vince Young, the owner is from Houston, and while that sounds like Young will go here, the coaching staff will win out in the end and land the best quarterback in the draft.  Leinart may have a weak arm, but he is very smart and is accurate, can you say Tom Brady?

4.New York Jets   D'Brickashaw Ferguson   OT    Virginia

The Jets are switching to a 3-4, and they are set at the quarterback position.  They could use a running back but can wait until later in the draft. Another glowing need is at offensive tackle, and D'Brickashaw is simply too good to pass up. Some say he is on par with Bosselli, Pace, and Ogden and will help fill a huge hole at left tackle.

5.Green Bay Packers   AJ Hawk   OLB   Ohio

The Pack wanted D'Brickashaw here, but he is gone.  The Packers have been losing offensive linemen the past few years so landing D'Brickashaw would have helped them a lot.  Hawk will help fill a huge hole in the linebacker corps.  I am not really that high on Hawk. He should be a good player at the next level, but I don't know about elite. They will address the offensive line in the 2nd round.

6.San Francisco 49ers   Vernon Davis   TE  Maryland

San Francisco needs offensive weapons for QB Alex Smith.  Landing Vernon Davis who some say is better than Kellen Winslow II coming out is really saying something.  The 49ers do already have a TE but can't pass on upgrading the position.

7.Oakland Raiders   Vince Young   QB   Texas

The Raiders in the off season signed quarterback, Aaron Brooks, but he is not a long term answer.  Having Vince Young fall here is very enticing to Al Davis.  He will select Vince Young and let Brooks run the team the first year or two, after that it’s the Vince Young show.  I feel very strongly that Vince Young will be a good quarterback in the league.

8.Buffalo Bills      Winston Justice   OT   USC

The Bills will draft Justice.  They have a big need for offensive tackle, as well as defensive tackle, and should fill it here with one of the two positions. Justice has been rising on draft boards after a good workout.  The Bills will then look at the 2nd round at filling the DT weakness.

9.Detroit Lions   Michael Huff   CB/S   Texas

Merry Christmas Lions fans, and with this selection the Lions select another WR (just kidding). It’s not going to happen this year.  Huff fits the new Tampa 2 FS position perfectly. He is a good tackler and has a knack to take ‘em to the house every time he picks one off.  While he is not a Sean Taylor or Roy Williams, he will make a name for himself.  Also don't be shocked if the Bills or Raiders take Huff. If Hawk and Huff are off the board, the Lions will likely trade back. It has been mentioned that Ernie Sims is also a possibility. Interesting side note: Huff's family is from Muskegon.

10.Minnesota Vikings   Jay Cutler   QB   Vanderbilt

*Projected Trade*   The Vikings need to draft a quarterback. Brad Johnson is getting old, and they traded Culpepper to the Dolphins. I think Cutler is being over hyped big time and the Vikings could be in for a letdown.  That said, Ben Roethlisberger and a few others say he is the best quarterback in the draft. He has that Brett Favre gunslinger mentality.

11.St Louis Rams   Antonio Cromartie   CB   Florida State

St. Louis has a need for cornerback, and a guy that is rapidly rising up the draft boards is Cromartie.  He was injured last year, but with the injury concerns aside he has top ten talent and would vastly improve the Rams secondary.

12.Cleveland Browns   Haloti Ngata   DT   Oregon

The Browns feel like they hit the lottery here as Ngata has slid right into their laps.  While they did land Washington this off season, he is at the end of his prime.  Ngata is a DT on par with the Lions Shaun Rogers and will anchor that Browns DL for years to come.

13.Baltimore Ravens   Brodrick Bunkley   DT   Florida State

Baltimore is all about defense.  Bunkley is a beast. He is built more toward being a speed defensive tackle. Baltimore has other needs and could go another way with this pick including safety.

14.Philadelphia Eagles   Chad Greenway    OLB   Iowa

The Eagles as well could go several different ways with this pick including wide receiver.  They lost T.O. in the off season after his tirades, so they will have to address that at some point.  Greenway is the best value on the board and is a need for them.

15.Denver Broncos   Chad Jackson   WR   Florida (from Atlanta)

The Broncos have two big needs, wide receiver and tight end.  They might not have the ammo to trade up into the top five or six slots to land Davis. If they end up standing pat here, they will fill the wide receiver position and then land the tight end they desperately need later on.

16.Miami Dolphins   Santonio Holmes   WR Ohio State

The Dolphins had made no secret that they want a wide receiver. They might want Jackson, but will take the next best thing.  They also lost Ricky Williams to a one year suspension for a failed drug test.  So they will probably take a running back later in the draft to backup Ronnie Brown.

17.Arizona Cardinals   Ernie Sims   OLB   Florida State

*Projected Trade* - Minnesota offered the farm to Arizona. The Cards could have used Cutler, but will fill that in the 2nd with Brodie Croyle. They can upgrade the linebacker position, and Sims is pretty good. Sims does have some injury concerns. He has had concussions in the past. Will they go away or is this going to be a problem?

18.Dallas Cowboys   Manny Lawson   OLB   NC State

The Cowboys have been busy this off season.  Lawson was overshadowed by Mario Williams at NC State.  The Boys will move Lawson to OLB in their 3-4.  They could also use a safety here so don't count out Jason Allen or Donte Whitner.

19.San Diego Chargers   Tye Hill   CB   Clemson

Tye Hill is very fast and is said to be better than Justin Miller who came out last year.  The Chargers have a need for a cornerback after trading one off to the 49ers a couple weeks ago.

20.Kansas City Chiefs   Kamerion Wimbley   DE   Florida State

Kansas City is said to love this guy and the Chiefs are all about defense now.  They stole Derrick Johnson last year, and Wimbley will really start making that Chiefs defense look tough.

21.New England Patriots   Richard Marshall   CB   Fresno State

The Patriots have a huge need at cornerback, and have had a hard time filling it after Ty Law left. They might go after Law again after the draft.  Belichick is good friends with Fresno State’s coach Pat Hill, and will feel comfortable taking someone that fits their system.

22.San Francisco 49ers   Jason Allen   S   Tennessee

(from Washington through Denver)

San Francisco landed Vernon Davis earlier, so they will look to the defensive side of the ball here. Jason Allen is a ball hawk, and they do have a need for a free safety.

23.Tampa Bay Buccaneers   Marcus McNeill   OT   Auburn

Chucky loves Auburn players.  They have a huge need for a offensive tackle and Chucky will not be able to resist landing a huge bookend like McNeill. Kenyatta Walker is constantly in Gruden's doghouse, so this pick makes sense.

24.Cincinnati Bengals   Marcedes Lewis   TE   UCLA

The Bengals could use some help on defense, but they have been lacking a really good tight end for a long time.  Lewis was at one time the best tight end in the draft, but Davis has changed that.  Lewis I feel will be a stud for the Bengals.

25.N.Y. Giants   Laurence Maroney   RB   Minnesota

The Giants just signed Lavar Arrington so linebacker is not a need.  They might consider Gabe Watson, defensive tackle out of Michigan, but he is rumored to have character issues.  In the end they will select Maroney to eventually replace Tiki Barber.

26.Chicago Bears    Sinorice Moss   WR   Miami (FL)

The Bears just signed CB Ricky Manning Jr., although he now has some legal problems.  They still might select a cornerback here. They tried to get wide receiver Antwaan Randel El in the off season. He went elsewhere, so wide receiver is also a possibility here. They need a speedy wide receiver to spread the field, and Moss is a burner.  He can also return kicks.

27.Carolina Panthers     Demeco Ryans   OLB   Alabama

Carolina will be tempted to take LenDale White here, but pass on him due to some conditioning issues he has had.  They have a need for an outside linebacker, and Ryans is a very smart player.

28.Jacksonville Jaguars    D'Angelo Williams   RB   Memphis

Fred Taylor is getting old, and can never stay healthy.  Taylor would have been a great RB if he could have stayed on the field. The Jags will select D'Angelo Williams.  He reminds me somewhat of Barry Sanders, and I really like this kid.

29.N.Y. Jets   Nick Mangold   C   Ohio State (from Denver)

The Jets selected D'Brickashaw earlier, and will now take the best center in the draft to fill the loss of Kevin Mawae.  The Jets will have a potentially great OL in 2-3 years.

30.Indianapolis Colts   Joseph Addai   RB   L.S.U.

Running back Edgerrin James left in free agency to go play for the Cardinals.  They now have a huge hole at running back. Addai had a strong workout, and is a good runner as well as receiver.

31.Seattle Seahawks   Kelly Jennings   CB   Miami (FL)

The Seahawks outplayed the Steelers in the Super Bowl but luck went the Steelers way.  They have a need for a cornerback, and Jennings will fill it nicely.  Teams in college did not throw toward Jennings and there is a reason why.  He doesn't have the stats but he's pretty good.

32.Pittsburgh Steelers   LenDale White   RB   USC

The Steelers lost Safety Chris Hope in the off season, and The Bus retired. They need a running back to share the load with Parker, and will select White who is slipping in the draft. Parker is more of a speed back so White makes sense. Safety is pretty strong this year and they can find one in the 2nd round.
