Quarterback Market

McCown is the third quarterback signed by the Lions so far this
off-season. Could it be possible they draft one too? |

How
many quarterbacks does an NFL football team need?
If you are the Detroit Lions, I suspect the current stable of five may not be
enough. Now that Matt Millen has assembled a cadre of quarterbacks including a
couple of could-be’s, a never really was, an almost was and a never will be – it
would seen that he might be finished with his attempt to corner the world market
on NFL quarterbacks.
Don’t get too excited, he may not be done yet.
For one thing, Brian Griese is still out there – who better to jump in and
handle the nuances of the West Coast Offense? It’s true -- we have the Martz
offense now, but there’s always next year and one must be prepared.
Plus, the buzz is that Vince Young may be falling down the charts and could be
available when the Lions number comes up on draft day. That could be a coup for
Millen, certainly he couldn’t pass on Vince Young!
What an opportunity to draft yet another QB! A quarterback with the potential to
also join the pack of receivers assembled by Millen. Surely, Matt must be
salivating at the possibility – wide receiver may have been last year’s
obsession, but Millen shows all the signs of coming down slowly from his demonic
possessions. Didn’t he add Corey Bradford earlier during this free agency
season?
Actually, Vince could even replicate the Harrington to Harrington signature pass
as a designed play! It’s another Martz thing -- take what works and go with it.
If Joey had only realized that play was going to be the epitome of his career
with the Lions, he probably would have insisted that it become part of the game
plan early on. Plus, Joey Harrington demonstrated the ability to hang on to a
football and his “yards after catch” was as impressive as any of his
contemporaries on the Lions.
Now, consider that same play performed with the artistry and athleticism of a
Vince Young – we can only imagine!
But then, many Lions fans hope for the day that Millen turns his “Rainman”
approach to player acquisition (WR – WR – WR – WR, then QB –QB – QB – QB) toward
solidifying the offensive line……….
Perhaps the need for so many “skill” players might be softened somewhat?
